Termite Mound Oven

Using a Termite Mound for an Oven

On a recent outing: Using a termite mound as an oven to cook mud crab, mud mussels and coconut. This is a very effective way to cook as the structure and “mud” hold the heat for a long time. Smoke is also kept to a minimum by drilling a hole in the back to create a flue, however like any fire there is always more smoke during the initial lighting stage. Once you have a bed of coals and the oven is nice and hot, a rock is used as a door to keep the heat in. The mud crab took 10 minutes to cook.
